Terminal colon cancer: when all hope seemed lost

I am a 42 year old male and was diagnosed with colon cancer in May 2004. I went the surgery, chemo and radiation route and almost said goodbye to everybody. There was no hope left by September 2004, I was very fatigued, by then bleeding constantly - not to mention the excruciating pain I felt due to the cancer having spread to my bones. In fact, I was busy getting my affairs in order. My son was 9 and my daughter only 2.

Enter Dr. Johanna Budwig, Cheryl - and my determination to heal

Then a friend told me about Cheryl. I had realized by then that the allopathic doctors I had been dealing with knew nothing about the healing of cancer. Wasting no time indulging in self-pity, I phoned Cheryl and after talking with her realised that I would have to do this myself. Cheryl immediately got me started on the Budwig protocol.

At first I never thought I would be able to do this protocol... but by October I could feel life returning to my body. I was able to walk normally again, most of the pain was gone and in November I went back to work. My oncologist reckons that I am a miracle - imagine that!! It was in fact simple work and dedication - I had to learn how to eat properly etc., but Cheryl trained my wife and myself and made it all easy and simple. We had to learn how to make sauerkraut, kefir, our own bread and sprout our own seeds [see Explanatory notes re kefir and sprouting], not to mention the juicing, correct foods and of course the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese mix and sunlight (which I took in the nude to the extent possible) on a daily basis. I used the Eldi oil rubs we purchase from Germany as well as body brushing and a mini trampoline (rebounder) [to activate the lymphatic circulation] every day.

Healthy today

I am healthy now - the Budwig protocol saved my life. My advice to anyone in a similar situation would be that you need to believe that you can cure yourself and start immediately - life is too precious to wait.

Fever, detoxification, epsom salt baths & other healing incidentals

While Dr. Budwig did not address the subject of detoxification in any specific detail, she mentioned the importance of proper elimination of wastes and was in favour of all natural modalities that have been traditionally used to enhance and recover health such as bathing, massages and other therapeutic processes[1], and her diet and protocol with its abundance of fresh organic foods, fresh herbs such as dandelion as well as sunlight has, as she was aware, an intrinsically detoxifying effect. Personally I feel that when you have cancer, you must work intensely at getting the toxins out of your system. Drink plenty of water with lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper (also known as The Master Cleanser Formula). During the first days when I was too sick to even eat, Cheryl told me to drink lemon water throughout the day. It is apparently a good way to detoxify your body.

I had plenty of fever spells, but felt better after each one. In fact, while I still had the terrible pains in my bones, I used to take extremely hot baths with epsom salts, using 500 g (a bit more than a pound) of epsom salts per bath. These baths made my temperature go right up, but were a good way to detoxify and get some magnesium into my aching bones. Afterwards, I regularly felt much better. I think the high temperatures make you sweat out all the toxins that are making you feel sick[2].

Making home-made sauerkraut

Sauerkraut, an important part of the daily dietary & health schedule & regimen prescribed by Dr. Budwig, is easy to make. Here is one recipe for self-made sauerkraut: chop 1 cabbage and 1/2 pineapple into fine pieces. Add about 1 teaspoon of raw sea salt. Put in glass jar and fill with filtered water. Cover with lid and leave for 3 to 4 days after which it is ready to eat. Another sauerkraut recipe from Sally Fallon's popular cookbook Nourishing Traditions uses whey in the fermentation process:
Ingredients: 1 medium cabbage, cored and shredded, 1 tablespoon caraway seeds, 1 tablespoon sea salt, 4 tablespoons whey.

In a bowl mix cabbage with caraway seeds, sea salt and whey. Pound with a wooden pounder or a meat hammer for about 10 minutes to release juices. Place in a quart-sized, wide-mouth mason jar and press down firmly with a pounder or meat hammer until juices come to the top of the cabbage. The top of the cabbage should be at least 1 inch below the top of the jar. Cover tightly and keep at room temperature for about 3 days before transferring to cold storage. The sauerkraut may be eaten immediately, but it improves with age. (After putting the cabbage in the jar, you may want to add some extra water mixed with a little more whey and salt over the top to make sure the cabbage is not exposed to any air.)

If you look around on the internet for making sauerkraut directions, you will find you can also use a sealed plastic bag filled with brine with the same salt content as the sauerkraut mix. They tell how much salt to add to how much water. You get your sauerkraut ready and make sure its a couple inches below the surface of liquid, then use the water bag as a weight in place of the plate. If you have the right size of bag it will seal off the surface of the sauerkraut mixture eliminating the need to skim the scum that will form using the plate method. I used some old 1 gallon pickle jars and used ziplock bags for the water bag. Two heads of cabbage makes about 5 lbs of shredded sauerkraut. It is about the right amount for a gallon jar.

Nourishing Traditions states that the salt (in sauerkraut) "inhibits putrefying bacteria for several days until enough lactic acid is [produc]ed to preserve the vegetable (cabbage) for many months" .

Making home-made kefir (to use as the basis for kefir quark)

Kefir is easy to make yourself as well. Put kefir grains in a jug, fill with farm milk (don't use store-bought milk or at least use organic milk, but try to get raw organic farmer’s milk*) and leave for 4 days. Pour the kefir through a sieve to save the kefir grains. Strain the kefir through a kitchen towel, piece of plain white/natural real linen fabric, some unbleached, 100% cotton muslin (old, well washed muslin pillowcases will do), or similar cloth[3]. Line a colander with the fabric, and let the whey drain out (for about 12 hours) until you have a quark- or cottage-cheese-like mass (make sure the cloth contains no detergent residues or similar irritants/toxins).[4]

The kefir grains are re-used to make a new jug of kefir. Never throw away your grains. The kefir grains grow with every batch you make and you can share them with all your friends. Kefir is like love - if you look after it well, it will grow and grow and you can share it with everybody. Also make sure to use the whey. Whey is reputedly very healthy and contains many minerals and other nutrients, so drink it or use it as in the second sauerkraut recipe listed above. You should also find recipes for cooking with whey on the Internet.

* I got my kefir grains from Cheryl. She imported the grains from New Zealand and gives it to all the sick people in her group. She also gave me a list of organic dairy farmers in our country in and around the cities and the rural areas (which I think she requested from the Department of Agriculture in our country). If you can get a list like this you can phone the dairy farmers in your area and ask them if you can collect raw milk from them on a weekly basis or similar. When I started, the closest dairy farmer to me was 180 km (c. 115 miles) away but after phoning around I found a cabbage farmer in that area who delivers his goods in my town on a weekly basis and now he collects my milk and brings it to me. I gave him a cooler box to put my milk in while in transport. The bonus is I now get my organic cabbage for my sauerkraut this way as well. The funny thing is the cabbage farmer asked me why I drink the unprocessed milk and when I told him, he said his wife had cancer too. Now she, too, is doing the Budwig diet for breast cancer and is also much improved. At the beginning, he charged me for bringing my milk but now he wants no money because I helped his wife.

Sprouting seeds

To sprout seeds you can use a sprouter tray or even simple glass jars for certain seeds. We sprout wheatgrass (on a tray), mung beans, alfalfa and some sunflower seeds. We both eat and juice them. Put your seeds on the tray and pour water over them. Make sure they drain well. Dowse with fresh water every day. After 2 to 3 days the sprouts are ready to eat.

Eldi oils, body brushing and mini trampoline (rebounder)

Eldi oil rubs are part of the Budwig protocol for serious cases, see “What are Eldi oils?”. On Cheryl’s advice, I have also included body brushing and jumping on a mini trampoline, both of which help to increase lymphatic circulation and thus detoxification. Body brushing: You must brush your skin with a dry brush before you shower or do the oil rubs. It stimulates the lymph flow (circulation) and makes you feel good [it should also allow the pores to be more open and receptive to the Eldi oil]. Follow up with the Eldi oil rub, then a hot shower without soap and another shower using soap, as specified by Dr. Budwig [make sure to use the purest soap possible without added chemicals, such as pure olive oil or similar soap]. Cheryl explained that I must shower 30 seconds with hot water and 30 seconds with cold water - 3 times in a row, also in order to stimulate my lymph flow. (I now order 2 bottles of Eldi oil from Germany at a time which last me for almost three months, but in the beginning I used them up much quicker - like in one month’s time.)

Jumping on a mini trampoline (rebounding)

As mentioned, jumping on a mini trampoline also stimulates lymphatic flow and thus the removal of toxins. I jump every hour for five minutes (but in the beginning only 2 minutes per hour).

Explanatory notes re kefir and sprouting

In the powerful healing testimonial featured above, Allan mentions kefir and sprouting as apparently obligatory parts of Dr. Budwig’s protocol which helped him heal of a (seemingly) desperate illness in record time. Now Dr. Johanna Budwig to our knowledge did not mention kefir and sprouting, but she was in favor of adding other foods or treatments to the protocol (implying “the more the better”) so long as they were natural[1]. For example hydrotherapy or Cheryl's recommended use of brushing and massaging the body. We are sure that the idea of sprouting, offering a natural goldmine of nutrients and enzymes, would have met with Dr. Budwig’s approval as well.

The specific cases in which Cheryl was/is recommending and using home-made kefir quark (i.e. using kefir grains as the fermenting agent for milk instead of using quark made from buttermilk or normal yoghurt cultures[5]) for people like Allan are:

  1. Where the patient cannot tolerate dairy products such as quark or cottage cheese.
  2. Where people come to her from her country’s hinterland where quark or cottage cheese cannot be obtained. (In these cases she may additionally suggest to use the more easily available goat milk.) As mentioned above, the finished kefir is then strained through a cloth to obtain home-made quark. Cheryl originally imported the kefir grains from New Zealand and now gives them to all the sick people in her group to start their own cultures with. As explained above, kefir grains grow and multiply as you use them, and soon you can supply different people in the village with them.[4]

3 You can also use a metal mesh coffee filter which reportedly also works fairly well to drain homemade quark or cottage cheese. Do not for convenience’s sake use paper towels, apparently these have chlorine (and possibly other) residues left in them from the paper-making process

5 Please note that the most recommended yoghurt starter cultures seem to be Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and L. casei bacteria (so-called probiotics, of which there are a number). Beneficial gut bacteria constitute the healthy intestinal flora necessary for good digestion and immune function and are compromised in many persons due to antibiotics (and possibly pesticide and other toxin) ingestion (and even exposure to antibacterial cleaners).
