Tips how to get rid of lactose intolerance and dairy sensitivity

Since dairy in the form of quark or cottage cheese forms an integral and essential part of Dr. Budwig’s Oil-Protein Diet and a number of people are either hesitant to consume dairy or display allergy symptoms to it (lactose intolerance), here are tips, suggestions and testimonials regarding the subject of how to remedy and overcome dairy/cottage cheese/lactose intolerance and sensitivity, which complement the observations made in Vegan Alternatives to Cottage Cheese/Quark? and Why Organic Dairy.
On Suggested & Possible Reasons for Dairy/Lactose Intolerance and Sensitivity
- Pasteurization (heat treatment): generally speaking, all commercial milk - even organic - seems to be pasteurized. Pasteurization destroys beneficial bacteria (probiotics) and enzymes naturally occurring in milk products, both of which help in digestion. Perhaps worst, pasteurization denatures dairy proteins.
- Homogenization: various research points to homogenisation of milk being a culprit in consumers experiencing lactose intolerance symptoms and “milk allergy”.
- Non-organic milk: compare Why Organic Dairy.
Tips and Suggestions For Dairy/Cottage Cheese/Lactose Intolerance/Sensitivity on the Budwig diet: How To Tolerate Dairy Products
- Use organic milk only.
- Use organic and raw dairy products wherever obtainable.
- Re-introduce beneficial gut bacteria into pasteurized milk products by culturing your own yoghurt and making yoghurt quark from it by straining.
- Buy products with live cultures (such as Nancy's Cottage Cheese, see www.nancysyogurt.com which also provides a store locator).
- Use goat’s milk products/goat yoghurt (best to drain it to obtain yoghurt quark). Goat milk is more expensive than cow’s milk.
- Use kefir.[1]
- Use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique): I highly recommend EFT (or similar "energetic" techniques) as a complement to the Budwig diet & protocol, see Introduction to EFT: Healing Mind and Body By Reestablishing Healthy Energetic Flow. EFT is also reported to have healed lactose intolerance.
(As C.C., Long Beach, CA, commented: “EFT is a meridian-based DIY technique helping many to overcome compulsions and addictions [and numerous other issues and complaints], of which an aversion to cottage cheese could be considered. EFT may warrant investigation by those who really want to carry out Dr. Budwig's protocol as she intended and overcome their aversion to cottage cheese.”)
If none of the above suggestions are successful (or feasible) for you, you may wish to try one of the following approaches.
- Take the enzyme lactase when consuming dairy (lactase pills etc.).
- Try organic low-lactose milk (if available) and make yogurt and/or yoghurt quark with it.
Finally
- a testimonial of 2013 of a (so far) seven-year survivor of glioblastoma stage IV, who actually substituted wild salmon for the flaxoil/quark mix would certainly not find the approval of Dr. Budwig but is interesting as well, see the report featured under How long did Dr. Budwig advise a cancer patient to stay on the “strict” Budwig diet (scroll to "One possible counter-example").
Some Testimonials of Lactose Intolerance Overcome in Various Ways
- “For seven years I have known that I am intolerant to milk protein. I am very thankful to have learned that Demeter[2] milk (non-homogenised!) can possibly be tolerated. I tried it immediately and in fact, got no symptoms! Your article ... ‘Allergy due to homogenised milk’ has convinced me that it wasn’t my belief (placebo effect) that led to my remaining symptom-free. Often nutritional allergies are dismissed as being purely psychosomatic in origin.”
(Translated by Healing Cancer Naturally from a reader’s letter to the German health food magazine “Schrot und Korn”, May 2007, titled “Dairy intolerance only with homogenised milk?”) - Nancy's rennetless organic cottage cheese: “I am normally-lactose intolerant but I've had no problem at all digesting Nancy's and the taste IS wonderful! Maybe it's because of the live bacteria cultures they add to it.”
- “I was willing to try the cottage cheese and flax oil, but the cottage cheese would come back up every time I swallowed it. I couldn't keep it down no matter what. In desperation, I switched to yogurt. Surprisingly, I had no problem keeping it down and it doesn't affect me at all negatively.
I've been doing this for almost four months now without any adverse effects and the lump in my neck has gotten noticeably smaller to where it's not even viewable. I know some will say you have to eat cottage cheese [or quark], but it doesn't do you any good if you can't keep it down. I don't know if yogurt is milder or what, but it's been a Godsend for me.” (credits: Cheryl M.) - “I had the problem of bloating while I ate cottage cheese and switched over to (drained) goat yoghurt. I enjoy the stronger flavor and have none of the unpleasant side effects of bovine dairy.”
- "Kefir[1] cottage cheese (or quark) is most certainly our solution for lactose-intolerant people. It works like a charm." (Comment by an experienced Budwig cancer carer)
Lothar Hirneise's experience and simple advice for overcoming lactose intolerance
Lothar Hirneise is an eminent German cancer researcher and author as well as the only "pupil" Dr. Budwig ever accepted and personally taught. Regarding lactose intolerance, Hirneise writes in his newest (2013) book Das große Koch- und Lehrbuch der Öl-Eiweiß-Kost (The Great Oil-Protein Diet Cook and Textbook):
"Of twenty people supposedly diagnosed with lactose tolerance, ten don't even have it, and nine can be healed by simple measures such as juice fasting combined with freshly ground flaxseed as used by Dr. Budwig" (this kind of diet was typically prescribed as a "Transition diet", see Dr. Johanna Budwig: The Practical Implementation of My Oil-Protein Diet).
Another author also observed that people with so-called lactose intolerance have found that they were able to eat the cottage cheese/flax oil mix with no adverse reactions whatsoever.
If you want to be absolutely sure to get the Budwig diet right, there is no better resource than the landmark book "Budwig Diet — How To Get It Right — The Ultimate Guide":
Written by German Budwig scholars Michael Bierschenk and Ulla Schmid to "fill in all the gaps" and rectify the many misleading errors spread by self-appointed Budwig "experts", this comprehensive guide was published in 2023 on Amazon as a Kindle and a paperback. It is also available as a downloadable PDF at a special introductory price.
. As it says on the cover: "This book will walk you through the world-famous Budwig protocol and hold your hand each step of the way."Footnotes

2 Demeter milk is milk from biodynamic husbandry. Biodynamic agriculture imposes the strictest rules of all organic forms of agriculture.
