Combatting radiation poisoning tips

Chelating (detoxifying) excess ionizing radiation & destructive radioactivity from your body and treating radiation burns/damage naturally

by Healing Cancer Naturally © 2006 & 2007
Copyright Notice

Have you submitted your body to ionizing radiation either for medical diagnostic purposes (fluoroscopy/mammography/other medical x-ray exams such as Ct scans and PET scans) or in the course of radiotherapy treatment? Or are you otherwise concerned by excessive radiation exposure, overload or poisoning (such as living near a nuclear reactor facility, working with diagnostic radiological equipment/in the nuclear processing industries/uranium mining/uranium or plutonium processing)? Have you been exposed to radioactive particles or higher ionizing radiation doses stemming from other sources such as depleted uranium (DU), testing of atomic weapons, frequent flights in higher altitudes etc.?

Here are a number of tips and suggested remedies how to naturally help your body excrete damaging radioactive elements (e.g. strontium and radioactive iodine) or detoxify (or scavenge) their noxious byproducts such as free radicals as well as deal with radiation burns by using dietary, nutritional, herbal and other naturopathic approaches and modalities. The supporting research studies quoted here have been gleaned from PubMed, the official biomedical database publishing only scientifically validated research English-language].)

Note: Healing Cancer Naturally does not endorse conventional cancer and tumor treatment by radiation therapy (radiotherapy/X-rays).

Macrobiotic diet against radiation sickness

Barbara Brennan writes in her classic book "Light Emerging": “If you are having any kind of radiation treatments, consider going macrobiotic. According to Michio and Aveline Kushi, macrobiotics is very effective in curing radiation sickness. In his book 'Macrobiotic Diet', Michio Kushi states: ‘At the time of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, Tatsuichiro Akizuki, M.D., was director of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Nagasaki. Most patients in the hospital, located one mile from the center of the blast, survived the initial effects of the bomb, but soon after came down with symptoms of radiation sickness from the radioactivity that had been released. Dr. Akizuki fed his staff and patients a strict macrobiotic diet of brown rice, miso 1] and tamari soy sauce soup, wakame and other sea vegetables, Hokkaido pumpkin, and sea salt and prohibited the consumption of sugar and sweets. As a result, he saved everyone in his hospital, while many other survivors in the city perished from radiation sickness.’” 2]

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) baths (testimonial)

“If you were near Chernobyl or if you had X-rays or radiation treatments for cancer, my radionics practitioner said that you can soak your body in baking soda baths to help pull out the radiation from your body. If you look all over the web, there is talk about patients who have had mouth cancer who were given radiation treatments to get rid of the cancer, and then told to gargle with baking soda mixed in water.”

Tip: If you look for online sellers of baking soda, you might pay a fraction for it as compared to buying in a store or pharmacy as long as you buy larger amounts (which you will need if you plan on bathing regularly). A friend bought it very cheaply on Ebay but there are bound to be similar venues where online merchants offer inexpensive baking soda.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) rinses

The study "A research review of the current treatments for radiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer" published in Oncology Nursing Forum (2002) arrived at the conclusion that “the most effective measure to treat radiation-therapy-induced mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer is frequent oral rinsing with a sodium bicarbonate rinse, to reduce the amount of oral microbial flora.” (see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/12183755)

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate/bicarbonate of soda) plus sea salt baths

Similarly to the above, Barbara Brennan recommends in "Light Emerging" to take 20-minute baking soda cum sea salt baths (mixing half a pound of salt and half a pound of baking soda) to drain the body of DOR (deadly orgone energy as described by Dr. Wilhelm Reich). Since such baths are “energy draining”, she advises to be careful when getting up from them (circulation) and lie naked in the sun afterwards to recharge one’s battery. I would add the salt when the bathtub is somewhat filled already to avoid possible (corrosion) damage to any metal parts.

Epsom salt

Epsom salts are a cheap white powder made of crystals of hydrated magnesium sulfate (chemical formula MgSO4 7H2O) which is used as a purgative etc. Any pharmacy or drug store should carry it. Use in baths. Epsom salts baths were part of this “terminal” colon cancer victor’s protocol.

Maria Treben's herbal treatments

The book "Maria Treben's Cures" contains two case histories of women most severely damaged by radiation treatment after mastectomy who successfully treated themselves following Maria Treben's advice. More at Maria Treben's "miracle" herbal cancer cures (I).

Zeolites (as clinoptilolite powder)

Zeolites (a family of naturally occurring minerals, also produced in synthetic form) have been used to clean up water contaminated with radioactivity and similar pollutants and apparently also successfully applied to chelate various environmental and other toxins from the human body as well as as a successful cancer treatment (both in human cancer patients and in dogs who had developed spontaneous tumors, i.e. not cancer artificially induced in the laboratory). More at Zeolites, Terminal cancer remission testimonials thanks to tribomechanically activated zeolites and Dogs' cancer cure testimonials involving finely ground zeolites (natural clinoptilolite powder).

Schindele's minerals (Superbiomin)

Discovered by Austrian Robert Schindele, Superbiomin is a natural volcanic rock powder which contains numerous minerals and trace elements. According to the report by expert Dr. Erik Mikura, its special chemical composition is found nowhere else in the world. Superbiomin powder has been credited with numerous health benefits - perhaps due to a similar "mechanism" as occurs with the intake of seaweed, i.e. replenishing depleted mineral stores and providing missing trace elements to the body. In his book, "Superbiomin: The 'Superbiomin' With Its 26 Mineral Elements for Human Beings, Animals And Nature", Robert Schindele reports the case of a man damaged by radiation from uranium mining (he suffered with a disease of the spinal cord, trembling hands, and an itching body). After several days of taking the powdered volcanic rock, the trembling was gone as were all the other complaints.

Urine therapy

Dr. G.K. Thakkar writes in his book "Wonders of Uropathy" that a radiologist from Nagpur, India, named Dr Parekh informed him "that he got rid of the x-ray radiation by urine therapy which he had suffered due to constant exposure to radiation during his practice as a radiologist".

Dietary fiber

The study "Dietary fibers as radiation protectors" published in the Russian-language Voprosy Pitaniia in 1997 (see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9206888) found that fiber had radioprotective properties, preventing the incorporation of nuclides and accelerating their elimination. The study used concentrates of dietary fibers isolated from lemon peel, beetroot residues, grape seeds and other plants.

Eating fruits and vegetables

A study published in the British Journal of Cancer in 2003 titled " Vegetables and fruit intake and cancer mortality in the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Life Span Study" had followed 38,540 atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki between 1980 and 1998. The study found that daily or almost daily fruit consumption was linked to a 12% reduction in cancer mortality. It found additional evidence that daily fruit and vegetables consumption reduces the risk of all cancers, particularly those of the stomach, liver, and lung (see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12618875).

Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)

According to the study "Radioprotective potential of mint: A brief review" by Baliga MS and Rao S., published in the Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics (2010), two species of the humble mint (Mentha piperita and Mentha arvensis) show promise regarding radioprotective effects in humans. The aromatic herbs have protected mice against the sickness and mortality induced by γ-radiation and the aqueous extract of M. piperita protected the radiosensitive organs (testes, gastrointestinal and hemopoetic system). The speculated mechanisms include free radical scavenging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimutagenic effects, metal chelation, and enhancement of the DNA repair processes. (Animal experimentation results are of course far from reliable indicators what works for humans, and for this and ethical reasons Healing Cancer Naturally strongly opposes the practice.)

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary is a time-honoured aromatic herb with numerous medicinal uses. Among other applications, rosemary essential oil has antimicrobial activity against many bacteria, yeasts and fungi (as stated in the official Pharmacopoea Europaea) and can be used both topically (in a 6-10 percent) solution and internally at a dose of 3–4 drops.

A study published in 2009 found one of its compounds - rosmarinic acid - to be photo-protective against UV and other types of ionizing radiation, see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/19084569 .

Another study (from 2006) found more radioprotective effects of rosemary compounds, see "Radioprotective-antimutagenic effects of rosemary phenolics against chromosomal damage induced in human lymphocytes by gamma-rays" at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/16536576 .

To benefit from these and other virtues of rosemary, it may be wisest to include the fresh herb in one's daily foods and drinks (such as in vegetable-based smoothies).

Caffeic acid - a very common secondary plant compound

A study titled "Caffeic acid protects human peripheral blood lymphocytes against gamma radiation-induced cellular damage" published at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/18561333 showed that this extremely common plant compound (it's actually found in all plants) has promising radioprotective potential.

The database www.phenol-explorer.eu/contents/polyphenol/457 lists all foods in which caffeic acid can be found and in which amounts.

Apple pectin

Pectin is a soluble fiber found in large amounts in fruits such as raw pears, guavas, plums, oranges and other citrus fruits, with fresh apples at 1–1.5% pectin content being one of the richest sources. Commercially pectin is mostly produced from citrus peels (30% pectin) and apple pomace.

Pectin has multiple helpful effects in the human body among which

  • as a good source of fiber, it forms a gel that can absorb toxins in the colon
  • pectin appears to reduce the damaging effects of cholesterol
  • as a stool-bulking agent, it is useful both against constipation and diarrhea
  • pectin binds to various toxic heavy metals such as mercury and lead
  • pectin fibre contains the glyconutrient Galactose
  • prescribed before liver and gallbladder flushes, apple juice and its pectin content apparently helps soften the stones
  • apple pectin appears to draw radioactive waste from the body and to help excrete it via the colon.

After the Chernobyl disaster, apple pectin was used to reduce radioactive cesium levels in children, see the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study comparing an apple-extract containing 15-16% pectin with a similar placebo-powder, titled "Reducing the 137Cs-load in the organism of 'Chernobyl' children with apple-pectin", published in Swiss Medical Weekly (2004), see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/14745664 (137Cs is a radioactive isotope of caesium).

The 2010 book "Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences)" by Alexey V. Yablokov confirms that Russian research into pectin's radioprotective effects showed that administering apple-pectin preparations promoted effective excretion of incorporated radionuclides in Chernobyl victims, with results demonstrating up to 50% improvement over control groups.

Similar studies include

  • "The use of pectin-containing enterosorbents in exposure to radionuclides and heavy metals" (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/1441405)
  • "Pectin-containing products in the dietary nutrition of subjects exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station"
  • "The efficacy of the internal use of Slavyanovsk mineral water and a pectin extract in the combined health resort treatment of children exposed to radiation action"
  • "The use of pectin hydrogel in the therapy of acute postradiation epitheliitis and trophic disorders" (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/9053220)

Even beyond possible radiation and heavy metal chelation benefits, with fresh apples and freshly squeezed apple juice being such a rich source of multiple nutrients and health benefits, it makes sense to include them as a staple in one's daily diet. Make sure to use ony unsprayed (organic or wild) apples.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone with multiple functions and health benefits synthesized by the human body (albeit only under conditions of darkness) as well as available as a supplement (in capsule, tablet, sublingual, or liquid form as well as as a transdermal patch).

As shown in the literature review "Melatonin protection from chronic, low-level ionizing radiation" (published in Mutation Research in 2011, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22185900), melatonin can also help protect DNA against (or reduce the damage from) chronic, low-level ionizing radiation due to radioactive caesium (137Cs), cobalt (60Co) or X-rays. Melatonin's protective action against ionizing radiation is thought inter alia to be due to its efficacy as a free radical scavenger. Melatonin supplements are well absorbed, virtually devoid of side effects, and well tolerated even over the long term.

Honey treatment against radiation mucositis in head and neck cancer patients treated with radiation

A study done on 40 patients undergoing radiotherapy to the oropharyngeal mucosal area showed that topically applied pure natural honey significantly reduced the occurrence and/or severity of subsequent radiation-induced mucositis. (Biswal BM, Zakaria A, Ahmad NM. Topical application of honey in the management of radiation mucositis: a preliminary study. Published in. Supportive Care in Cancer in 2003)

Another study researching the effect of honey on head and neck cancer patients was conducted by Sela M, Maroz D, Gedalia I: "Streptococcus mutans in saliva of normal subjects and neck and head irradiated cancer subjects after consumption of honey"; published in . Journal of Oral Rehabilitation in 2000.

Prophylactic use of pure natural honey was effective in reducing mucositis resulting from radiochemotherapy, as shown in the study "Honey as topical prophylaxis against radiochemotherapy-induced mucositis in head and neck cancer" (see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/18485252).

It seems that honey was also found beneficial for radiation-damaged skin since there is a study titled "The effect of honey compared to conventional treatment on healing of radiotherapy-induced skin toxicity in breast cancer patients" listed at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/16864180 but no details are provided.

Honey poultices eliminate medical radiation damage incl. bone pain (anecdotal report)

The book "Die Heilkunst von Morgen" by Erika Herbst contains the testimonial of a woman who eliminated the sequels of radiation treatment (a feeling of internal heat as well as bone pain in a rib) by applying honey poultices every other day (no further details are provided but it's extremely likely that here, too, the honey used was raw natural honey).

Also compare Treating Cancerous Tumors with Pure Raw Honey Packs.

Cysteine hydrochloride

Dr. Donsbach writes: “An amino acid, cysteine protects against the damage of radiation by terminating the free radicals produced by ionizing radiation.” Cysteine, together with methionine, cystine, and their derivatives, is numbered among the “sulphurated amino acids” due to the fact that these amino acids contain sulfur in addition to carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. Sulfurated amino acids are amply present in Dr. Johanna Budwig’s healing diet & protocol. (Note for cancer patients on Dr. Budwig’s Protocol: conceivably, taking isolated cysteine hydrochloride versus taking it in its natural complex with other nutrients as occurring in organic foods] may not be compatible with the Budwig Diet which insists on shunning most man-made supplements.)

Calendula officinalis: topical treatment of radiation burn scars, for skin irritations and severe burns

I have read that dried calendula flowers available from herbal and health stores or similar outlets as well as from the Internet make an excellent "tea" (to be applied topically) for severe burns and many skin outbreaks (get organic quality calendula if possible). While Weleda makes a Calendula Baby Cream, made with sweet almond oil, lanolin, beeswax, biodynamic calendula officinalis flower extract, perfume from natural essential oils and other ingredients, this may be less effective than the following much less expensive herbal calendula tea:

Pour a cup of boiling water onto 1-2 teaspoonsful of the florets and leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes (other sources may state different infusion practices and times). Use externally as a lotion or ointment (also recommended for cuts, bruises, diaper rash, sore nipples, other burns & scalds). Let dry after application. Completely safe and apparently non-staining. Can also be taken as tea.
Note: Liquid Calendula for sale apparently is preserved with alcohol.]

Echinacea for radiation burns (testimonial)

“A friend of mine with stage 4 cancer used echinacea (probably standard dosage) which had been quietly suggested by her radiologist - and after whole body maximum lifetime dose radiation, never developed the radiation burns which seem to be so common. No lobster look. Might be worth looking into.”

Fresh aloe plant gel for radiation burns

As early as the 1930s, Collins and Collins reported treating a woman with severe roentgen dermatitis with desquamation on the forehead with fresh aloe leaf. Itching and burning sensations subsided within 24 hours, and within five weeks of continued treatment, normal skin sensation was restored and no scar had formed. After three months, the forehead pigmented normally as did the rest of the skin when exposed to sunshine. Other experiments showed similar results.

In 1953 an animal study[3] under the auspices of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission determined Aloe vera’s effectiveness for treating radiation burns. The “treatment was found to hasten both the degenerative and reparative phases of the lesion so that complete healing of an ulcer ... was accomplished within two months of treatment, while the untreated ulcerations were still not completely healed more than four months after irradiation.”

In 1959, even the FDA reportedly “concluded from studies conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission at the radiation burn center at Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico that aloe gel did have a healing effect on skin tissue”.

Doing a search of the official medical database PubMed for the terms "Aloe vera radiation" (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/?term=Aloe+vera+radiation) yields numerous relevant results including very recent ones (2012/13) such as "Aloe vera for prevention of radiation-induced dermatitis" (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/23904773) and "Potential prevention: Aloe vera mouthwash may reduce radiation-induced oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients" (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22855041). The latter study also suggests that aloe vera mouthwash due to its antifungal and immunomodulatory activities reduces (equally radiation-induced) oral candidiasis as well.

Even more research results can be read for instance at "Aloe Vera in the Treatment of Radiation Ulcers of Mucous Membranes" published at radiology.rsna.org/content/32/5/598.extract .

Suggestion: Use the fresh gel found inside the leaves - cut the leaf lengthwise and apply it on the burn with the gel side facing the skin. It appears that in order to obtain satisfactory results, fresh aloe must be used.
Compare Aloe Vera - the medicine plant and this impressive native cancer therapy & prevention formula mainly consisting of aloe and honey which has helped cure many cases of cancer, even so-called terminal cases.

Epi-soothe cream for burns etc. (testimonial)

“I've been using Epi-soothe cream and it works wonderfully for rashes, burns, open sores etc.!”

Rose hip oil for burns etc.

Apparently rose hip oil, extracted from Rosa moschata seeds which contain nearly 80% linoleic and linolenic fatty acids, gives excellent results on skin that has been burnt such as after undergoing radiotherapy.

Yoghurt, sauerkraut juice (and likely other lactic-acid-fermented foods and drinks containing probiotics)

Yoghurt and sauerkraut juice have been found to help with combatting radiation poisoning. See the powerful evidence reported under Lactic-acid-fermented food treatment for cancer according to Dr. Dr. Johannes Kuhl (scroll to "Yoghurt and sauerkraut juice [lactic-acid-fermented foods]: observations indicating radioprotective effects and healing results in cases of radiation damage").[4]

Kombucha tea (testimonial)

As with the benefits above reported for yoghurt and sauerkraut juice, the following testimonial showing that kombucha can help protect from damage from radiotherapy may be owed to similar mechanisms as those at work with lactic-acid-fermented foods..

“I took kombucha all the way through my radiation (right over the stomach) and my doctor told me I was the only patient he'd had that never had nausea after being radiated in that area; it's wonderful for your stomach and intestines. It's much more potent and MUCH cheaper if you make it yourself. You just need a culture to start with. I make about 2 gallons at a time. It comes out to about 10 cents per bottle compared to $2-$3 in the stores.”

Kombucha is a fermented or brewed beverage which is cultured for a number of days. Combined with tea, it contains active enzymes, probiotics[4] (lactobacillus bacterium), amino acids, antioxidants, polyphenols and saccharomyces boulardi. Apparently very powerful with constipation (such as drinking half a glass 15 minutes before breakfast, with dosis increased as you get used to it.

Most remarkably, Kombucha has even been used as a cancer treatment. Also see Successful cancer treatment with Kombucha and coli preparations according to Dr. Rudolf Sklenar, Cancer cure testimonials: treatment with Kombucha and coli preparations according to Dr. Rudolf Sklenar and Kombucha cancer cure testimonials: more success reports.

Two kombucha brewing tips

Use green tea in your kombucha brew:
Apparently green tea contains tumor growth inhibiting factors (a polyphenol named EGCG) as well as other polyphenols (such as flavonoids) reputed to lower cholesterol, counteract free radicals, exhibit natural antibiotic characteristics or prevent blood clotting. Other ingredients include vitamin C, carotene, fluoride, zinc, selenium, manganese, potassium, niacin & folic acid.

Minimize or eradicate sugar:
The consumption of processed or refined sugar has been shown to be a risk factor in a number of health complaints including cancer. “Sugar is required in Kombucha to provide food for the yeast resident in the culture. Research and experimentation has shown that the best type of sugar to use is ordinary granulated white sugar, i.e. sucrose. During fermentation the sucrose is broken down to its constituent parts, the simple sugars - glucose and fructose. Glucose is responsible for the formation of most of the organic acids with the exception of acetic acid, which derives from fructose. Glucose, which constitutes about 70% of sucrose, ferments far quicker than fructose and it is the latter which provides the residual sweetness in Kombucha.
If you prefer less sweetness in your Kombucha you can either a) extend the fermentation period by a few days, thus further acidifying the brew, or b) replace some of the sucrose with glucose (dextrose monohydrate), often found in home brewing shops described as brewing sugar. A 50/50 mix is a good start and will produce a beverage high in organic acids with minimal sweetness in a short time, 6 to 8 days. You will probably find the perfect mix by trial and error.”

So it seems to make sure there is no processed sugar left in your kombucha, it would be advisable to let it ferment as long as possible or reasonable to make sure all the sugar has been consumed by the yeasts.

Above Kombucha tips have been adapted or copied verbatim from www.theteapot.co.uk/kombucha/ where you’ll find detailed preparation instructions and other kombucha information.

Dr. Johanna Budwig’s health diet & protocol & side effects from radiation treatments

Dr. Budwig expressly forbade cancer patients who followed her diet as a cancer treatment, to concurrently use radiation and/or other cytostatic treatments (chemotherapy) arguing that any cytostatic treatments directly counteracted the “cytodynamic” effect of her diet, i.e. negated the effectiveness of the protocol (compare Budwig diet: what to avoid). Interestingly, Healing Cancer Naturally has come accross two reports where cancer patients did combine the Budwig Protocol with radiation treatments. Both recounted that they did not have any of the side effects (or almost) that the other patients were experiencing such as infections, pain, urination problems, etc. They attributed this to the Budwig protocol helping them go through the radiation treatments without a problem. So, similar to what I’ve occasionally seen reported with supplementation, the protocol might enhance the ability of one's system to buffer some of the negative side effects associated with radiation by strengthening the body’s resiliency and natural defenses.

Compare High-dose vitamin C and chemotherapy/radiation side effects.

Calcium Bentonite Clay

Great (and possibly accurate) claims are being made for Calcium Bentonite Clay as a general detoxifier incl. as a very effective chelator for ionizing radiation, to be used both internally and externally (in baths etc.). Quote: “You have Calcium Bentonite Clay as your ally. By using Calcium Bentonite Clay as a lifestyle practice, as described in the book Living Clay, Nature’s Own Miracle Cure, by Perrya. Smith], you will ... protect your body from the daily bombardment of radiation.... R]adioactive material is of a positive charged ion. Calcium Bentonite Clay is a negative charged ion. Simply put, Calcium Bentonite Clay adsorbs and absorbs positive charged ions and you wash them off or pass them through your body."
(quoted from "Surviving a Dirty Bomb Attack", a booklet currently - 2015 - downloadable from www.globallight.net/pdf/Surviving-A-Dirty-Bomb-Attack_final.doc)

The price of calcium bentonite clay is high but varies greatly among providers (I’ve seen the cheapest offer so far at ebay at 20 pounds for 60US$).

Activated charcoal

"...activated charcoal appears to adsorb avidly with common radioisotopes, and appears promising as an alternative to resin ion exchange pellets used for the measurement of gastrointestinal transit by scintigraphy.” (from www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/9625498)

Algae: Chlorella & Spirulina

Chlorella ... touted as the perfect whole food ... has been found to improve the immune system, ... detoxify the body ... and] protect against radiation. (from the "Vitamin Bible" by Earl Mindell)

“In Chernobyl ... spirulina was used to help save many children from radiation poisoning. By taking 5 grams of spirulina a day for 45 days, the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk even proved that children on this protocol experienced enhanced immune systems, T-cell counts and reduced radioactivity. Israeli scientists have since treated Chernobyl children with doses of natural beta carotene from Dunaliella algae and proved that it helped normalize their blood chemistry. Chlorella algae, a known immune system builder and heavy metal detoxifier, has also shown radioprotective effects. Because they bind heavy metals, algae should therefore be consumed after exposure to any type of radioactive contamination.” (from radiationdetox.com)

Note that chlorella and spirulina are rather expensive. With some luck, you should find them cheaper online such as by buying them wholesale, with a close expiration date, etc.

Vitamin C, alpha lipoic acid (ALA)

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in high or mega-doses reportedly “alleviates most of the horrible side effects of radiation therapy” and is also an effective help with chemotherapy treatment. Additionally, I've seen alpha lipoic acid recommended against radiation overload, such as by taking 200 mgs twice daily.

As part of a vitamin C study, megadoses of vitamin C (25,000 mgs of vitamin C intravenously combined with ALA and vitamin E) were used to good effect by a number of Japanese clean-up workers prior to or after carrying out their dangerous task which exposed them to high radiation levels after the Fukushima disaster. The doctors overseeing the study recommend the twice daily intake of 1-2 g of lyposomal vitamin C (one dose of 25,000 mgs of intravenous vitamin C), 100 - 300 mgs of alpha lipoic acid and 100 - 200 IU vitamin E.

The animal study[3] (published in the Journal of Biomedical Physics & Engineering in 2015) "A Comparative Study on the Life-Saving Radioprotective Effects of Vitamins A, E, C and Over-the-Counter Multivitamins" found a significant radioprotective effect of Vitamin C in mice (see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26157731). Similar results were obtained in the study "Treatment of irradiated mice with high-dose ascorbic acid reduced lethality" found at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25651298.

More on vitamin C as a defense against damage from radiation and chemotherapy in humans

Green tea vs. strontium 90 (Sr-90)

Radioactive strontium 90 is extensively used in superficial radiotherapy of certain cancers and as a radioactive tracer. Green tea works against Sr-90 by inhibiting its intestinal absorption (see "The effect of green tea and related substances on the gastrointestinal absorption of strontium 90" published in the Journal of Radiation Research in 1965, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/ 5881676).

Modifilan, a concentrated brown seaweed extract and reportedly a potent radioactive elements chelator

Excerpted from modifilan.com:

MODIFILAN was developed in Russia by a group of scientists who worked in the State Rehabilitation Institute, where victims of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe underwent treatment. The healing qualities of seaweed had been known for centuries compare The importance of minerals and trace elements incl. Seaweed], so the Russian government instructed scientists to find an effective and powerful remedy for the radiation poisoning of that particular population. After trying out various forms of algae, one type yielded the best scientific data for this purpose. It was the brown seaweed known as Laminaria japonica, which grows wild in the northern Pacific Ocean off the coast of uninhabited islands far to the east of Russia, known as the Kurils.

One of the main qualities of Laminaria is its high content of sodium alginates, which are enhanced by the extraction process used to produce MODIFILAN. Alginates are the most effective organic elements that enable the human body to get rid of heavy metals and toxins. Not all "algae" have alginates; blue or green algae do not. According to scientific testing, only this brown seaweed does! The unique methods of extraction, as well as the quality of this seaweed, are key. MODIFILAN has about 50% of the highest quality alginates.

The low-temperature processing of MODIFILAN causes a sloughing off of the heavy outer fibers of the seaweed, while retaining the essential properties of the plant. This process further enhances its bioavailability, making the Laminaria more digestible. Forty pounds of raw Laminaria are required to make one pound of MODIFILAN. Eating 8 capsules of extract a day provides the same amount of good, organic micro- and macro-elements contained in an entire plate of this nutrient-rich seaweed.
And, it is not cooked. The oldest Japanese recipes of preparing seaweed tell us to eat seaweed raw, rather than cooked. Modern science affirms that an anti-cancer substance called Fucoidan, as well as beneficial polysaccharides, will break down if the seaweed is cooked. This was determined when studies were performed on the Japanese island of Okinawa, known for its lowest cancer death rate in Japan.

The Center for Preventive Medicine had 332 subjects in their study. For six months, 158 of the 332 subjects took Modifilan every day. After this time, those who had taken Modifilan had:

a. Significant shrinking of the lymph glands which had been enlarged
b. Improved digestive systems
c. Decrease in the incidence of bronchitis by 29.5%
d. No side effects

The Institute of Immunology carried out research on volunteers from the Chernobyl region, who were exposed to radiation and heavy metal poisoning.
The results of this research showed:
a. Modifilan is safe to use, nontoxic and nonallergenic
b. Modifilan is very effective in preventing the absorption of and promoting the excretion of radioactive elements (e.g. strontium and radioactive iodine).

Some volunteers began growing back their hair which had fallen out due to exposure to radioactive elements.

Results of the research at Biophysical Institute are:

a. Modifilan is effective in preventing the absorption of and in promoting the excretion of radioactive elements (e.g. strontium, cesium, and radioactive iodine)
b. Modifilan works to protect the thyroid glands by decreasing the accumulation of radioactive iodine. As a result of this research, Modifilan was recommended both as a healing and preventive food supplement.

The State Technical Medical Center concluded upon completion of their research that Modifilan is:

a. A safe food supplement
b. Recommended to increase lipid metabolism
c. Recommended to improve the function of the immune system
d. Safe to use and has no harmful effects on any bodily functions or organs.

At the Cardiovascular Center at the Sakhalin Hospital, patients were given up to ten grams of Modifilan every day for three months. The results showed:

a. Decrease of cholesterol by 26.5%
b. Decrease of B-lipoproteins by 25.1%
c. Decrease of triglycerides by 32.1%

No negative reactions were found in the kidneys, the liver and other organs. No side effects were found.”

Since Modifilan is a commercial product, the usual "caveat emptor" is likely to apply. It may be as effective (or perhaps more effective) and a lot cheaper to buy and consume the raw brown Laminaria seaweed itself.

Glutathione

Glutathione is an important antioxidant with multiple systemic functions including DNA repair. Research indicates that oral glutathione supplementation is of little value since it is poorly absorbed. The body however can synthesize it from the amino acids L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid, and glycine. To raise glutathione levels in various ways, for example by consuming cysteine-rich foods and/or supplements (compare above under "Cysteine hydrochloride"), raising your vitamin D levels (Calcitriol aka 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, the hormonally active form of vitamin D which seems to act as a catalyst for glutathione production) or in other ways can be helpful against radiation poisoning.

Enzyme therapy

"Enzymes substantially reduce the occurrence of metastases and the recurrence of cancer. They make malignant tissues more sensitive to radiation, and at the same time, reduce pain and other side effects of radiation. When used in conjunction with surgery, they reduce postoperative pain and hemorrhage." (excerpted from alkalizeforhealth.net/cancerpain.htm)
Compare Biopsies can spread cancer.

Homeopathics

Do a search for "anti-radiation homeopathic remedies", “homeopathic remedy antagonists” etc. There are both "drainage" and "opposing" formulas available that are said to work to remedy the harmful effects of ionizing and other radiation (radium, uranium, plutonium). As an example, after each exposure, you may wish to try taking a dose of the homeopathic remedy X-Ray 30C.

Ozone

Apparently, ozone can help to minimize the effects of radiation treatment and radiation poisoning (such as "anemia, leukopenia, thrombopenia, skin cancers, osteosarcoma, pneumonitis, pericarditis, myocarditis and myopathy", decreased libido, and amenorrhea) (from Interesting medical ozone facts).

D-penicillamin

In addition to its use as a chelating agent in cases of heavy metal poisoning (lead, cadmium or mercury), cancer researcher Dr. Johannes Kuhl reported on d-penicillamin's pronounced protective effect against x-rays and other short-wave radiation (at least in animal experimentation 3]). Mice tolerate three times higher radiation doses if administered 5.8 mg of d-penicillamin per 20g of body weight five minutes before whole-body irradiation. (D-penicillamin appears to have some side effects so might not be advisable as a first line of defense.)

Dr Emanuel Revici's radiation remedies

These remedies may presently not be available but were apparently able to reverse severe radiation illness and injuries in as little as 24 hours. Background on Dr. Revici in the book The Doctor Who Cures Cancer.

Technology's Curse - Diet for the Atomic Age

by Sara Shannon
347 Pages

Technology's Curse: Diet for the Atomic Age is one of the first books to examine this crucial problem and to offer a rational course of action in dealing with low level radioactive pollution. Based upon years of research, the author has collected the medical and scientific data clearly showing that some foods have protective properties which can safeguard us from the effects of this silent threat. The author presents the theories as to how and why these foods and food supplements stave off the effects of radiation and suggests dietary enhancements to maximize certain foods’ protective powers.

Contains the most up-to-date information drawn from research studies, documented journal articles, and interviews with leading scientific experts.

“... dealing with the subject of low level radiation exposures ... the best book ... I have read. It describes the background radiations we are exposed to in daily life. It also describes what can be done to avoid the dangerous effects of long term exposure to higher than normal levels of radiation. The book describes foods which help eliminate radioactive toxins that concentrate in the body and also describes foods to avoid.” (from a reader’s comment)

Biological, Chemical, and Nuclear Warfare - Protecting Yourself and Your Loved Ones: The Power of Digital Medicine

by Savely Yurkovsky (Author), William A. Tiller (Foreword)

"... a remarkable and timely book… showing us relatively simple pathways to protect ourselves ..." (William A. Tiller, Professor Emeritus of Materials Science at Stanford University, the foremost authority in the world in the emerging paradigm-breaking field – one of interface of biology and physics)

“... Recipe for Survival in a world where biological, chemical and nuclear exposure is a real threat. His use of Digital Homeopathy is essential for anyone who truly wants to improve their health and the health of their families from our most common illnesses. ... This book delivers more than the title promises. Yes, it does contain detailed, concise, and complete instructions that a layperson (or even a physician) could follow to augment his chance of survival in the event of a biological, chemical, or nuclear attack. ...The bonus is a history of homeopathy, the scientific evidence for its validity... Sage lifestyle, health, and environmental advice is also presented, all thoroughly researched and referenced. Highly recommended! (from readers’ comments)

Footnotes by Healing Cancer Naturally

1 Miso: paste made from fermented soya beans and barley or rice malt, used in Japanese/macrobiotic cookery

2 If you follow Dr. Johanna Budwig’s healing diet & protocol (which reportedly has also helped heal heavily irradiated (and “chemotherapied”) cancer patients formerly considered terminal and written off as beyond hope, see Budwig Testimonials), I would advise integrating the above-listed food items featuring prominently in the macrobiotic diet, such as seaweed, organic brown rice, miso soup etc. while leaving out or strongly curtailing honey and sweet fruit which are not permitted or heavily restricted in macrobiotics. Make sure to use truly organically grown foods: whole-grain rice is particularly laden with pesticide and similar toxic residues.

3 As mentioned before, animal experimentation is not supported by Healing Cancer Naturally.
